President Duterte has ordered the nationwide implementation of the Alert Level System (ALS)--his boldest move yet in reopening the country’s economy amid the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
The directive, which was spelled out in Executive Order (EO) No.151, does away with the old region-wide quarantine clarifications that--while crucial to preventing the spread of COVID-19--was too restrictive in terms of helping revive the business sector.
The ALS was initially piloted in the National Capital Region (NCR), the current classification of which is a relatively lenient alert level 2.
Meanwhile, the plot thickens over in the camp of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. The presidential daughter has resigned from Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), a regional political party in Mindanao which she formed in 2018.
The move is seen as part of the prelude of her expected substitution to an aspiring national candidate in the upcoming May 2022 elections. The rules say that she must join a national political party if she is to run for a national position next year.
Earlier, "Inday Sara" withdrew her candidacy for reelection as Davao City chief executive.
