Convicted drunk driver and actress Kim Sae-ron uploaded a photo showing her posing cheek to cheek with “Queen of Tears” star Kim Soo-hyun to show that she was successful and popular in the past, her acquaintances said.

Kim Sae-ron is currently on hiatus from her career after she was found guilty of drunk driving by the Seoul Central District Court in April last year and fined her 20 million won (about $14,900).

The case stemmed from an incident on May 18, 2022 when a drunk Kim Sae-ron was driving in Cheongdam, Gangnam in Seoul. She crashed her car and hit a guardrail, tree and a transformer. When she hit the transformer, it caused a power outage affecting 57 business establishments in the area for three hours.

Kim Sae-ron previously was under contract with Gold Medalist, Kim Soo-hyun’s current agency, until the drunk driving incident happened. In December 2022 her contract expired and was not renewed by Gold Medalist.

On March 24, before the airing of “Queen of Tears” episode 6, Kim Sae-ron uploaded a photo on her Instagram account showing her and Kim Soo-hyun posing cheek to cheek, which sparked rumors that they were dating.

The photo was deleted after a few minutes. However, Kim Sae-ron received backlash from netizens for the photo, with some saying it could affect the success of “Queen of Tears.” Others stated that it ruined their enjoyment of the drama, especially the romance between Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won, who play as a couple.

Kim Soo-hyun, through Gold Medalist, earlier denied the dating rumors, saying, “We would like to inform you that Kim Soo-hyun's dating rumors are unfounded. The photos that are spread online appear to have been taken when they were in the same agency in the past, and the intention of Kim Sae-ron's actions is unknown.”

In a vlog uploaded on YouTube on March 26, former Korean entertainment reporter Lee Jin-ho discussed the circumstances behind Kim Sae-ron’s photo.

“The reason Kim Sae-ron posted the photo seems to be a situation where impulsiveness and instability coexist. However, after she posted this photo, there was a huge backlash as she was featured in articles,” said Lee Jin-ho.

According to him, when the controversy grew, Kim Sae-ron revealed to her acquaintances that she was “'regretting' her mistake and impulsiveness. She communicated along with this that her own actions were so imprudent and she was wrong.

Lee Jin-ho also said that reports stating that Kim Sae-ron would issue an explanation about the photo was incorrect.

“Kim Sae-ron has currently cut off contact with everyone except her family and a very small number of acquaintances. Rather than revealing her position separately, she will reflect on herself," he said.

He added, “While she was self-reflecting over her own mistakes, Kim Soo-hyun, who had previously worked at the same agency, was enjoying his second heyday through a new drama.

According to her acquaintances, she uploaded the photo to show how she was successful in the past. Kim Sae-ron started as a child actress.

“So, I think she wanted to share the photo she took with the popular Kim Soo-hyun with her acquaintances. According to her acquaintances, she posted this impulsively to show off how successful she was in the past,” he said.

Because of the photo, Kim Sae-ron ranked first on the actress trend index on Rankify, a keyword ranking service.

On March 25, Rankify released the Korean actress trend index, showing Kim Sae-ron in first place with 514,002 points despite that she is on hiatus.

Placing second is Lee Bo-young (47,827), followed by Kim Nam-joo (35,963), Kim Go-eun (34,367), Han So-hee (33,683), and Park Ji-hyun (27,269).

Kim Soo-hyun also ranked first in the latest actor trend index with 124,352 points.
