The recovery of Philippine tourism from the devastating effects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has begun in earnest as the country reopened its door to foreign tourists for the first time in nearly two years.

Although only fully vaccinated foreign tourists coming from the countries with visa-free arrangement with the Philippines are being accepted, the development was enough to excite officials, particularly Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, over its economic prospects.

Specifically, Romulo-Puyat expressed optimism that the upcoming influx of foreign tourists would translate to job generation in the tourism sector.

Puyat said that since the start of lockdowns in the country back in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, about 1.1 million Filipinos lost their jobs as the government closed the borders.

Meanwhile, the number of fresh daily cases of COVID-19 maintained its steady descent as the country once again recorded fewer than 5,000 positive cases.

Only 4,575 new cases of the dreaded disease was recorded Thursday even as active cases nationwide dropped to just five digits, or 93,307 to be exact.
