A thorough investigation into the garbage-dumping incident outside the office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Davao City will be conducted, Malacañang said.
"Nakausap po mismo natin si Secretary Jonvic Remulla ngayong araw dahil kasama po siya sa meeting kanina, magkakaroon po ng malalimang pag-iimbestiga rito (We personally spoke with Secretary Jonvic Remulla today because he was part of the meeting earlier. A thorough investigation will be conducted into this matter)," Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said in a Palace briefing on Tuesday, June 9.
According to Remulla, the investigation could determine whether negligence occurred and whether any environmental laws were violated.
"Pero ayaw nating pangunahan kung ano magiging aksiyon po dito ni Secretary Jonvic Remulla pero sinigurado po niya na magpapaimbestiga po siya (However, we do not want to preempt whatever action Secretary Jonvic Remulla may ultimately take. What he did assure us is that he will order an investigation)," Castro said when asked whether there will be administrative sanctions against Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte.
Castro added that it will depend on the offense that may have been committed.
On Monday, Malacañang condemned the trash-dumping incident, calling it a "blatant disrespect of law."
Castro even called it "trash behavior." She stressed that aside from the potential health risks it poses to the public, the act violates environmental laws.
The Palace official has once again warned local government units (LGUs) to do their jobs and address issues at their landfills to improve waste management.
"So, sa lahat na po ng mga leader ‘no sa LGUs, tandaan po natin: kayo po ay para sa taumbayan, hindi pansarili. Hindi po dapat katamaran o pansarili ang iniisip, isipin ninyo po ang inyong constituents (So, to all local government leaders, let us remember: you are there to serve the people, not your personal interests. You should not be driven by laziness or self-interest; you should think about your constituents)," Castro said.
"So, sa lahat po ng mag-aakto na binabalewala ang kanilang constituents o ang kanilang trabaho, dapat po sila maimbestigahan (Therefore, any official who acts in a way that disregards their constituents or neglects their duties should be investigated)," she added.
