Gov't urged to promote, improve working conditions of teachers
Amid viral TikTok video, group underscores need to prioritize enhancing teachers' working conditions
As it welcomed the decision of the Department of Education (DepEd) not to penalize the angry teacher in the viral TikTok video, a group on Friday, March 22, urged the government to ensure better working conditions for those teaching in public schools.

“It is of utmost importance that the government promote and improve the working conditions of teachers for better education delivery and resolving the learning crisis,” the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines said in a statement.
“This necessitates addressing backlogs and massive shortages in basic education needs, and granting decent and livable salaries to all education workers,” it added.
A welcome move
ACT welcomed the DepEd’s “nonpunitive resolution and abidance of due process” on the matter of the public school teacher whose video went viral after scolding her students.

“Kinikilala namin ang naging hakbang ng ahensya sa pagresolba sa isyung kinaharap ng kapwa namin guro (We acknowledge the agency's steps in resolving the issue faced by our fellow teacher),” ACT Chairperson Vladimer Quetua said. “Mahalaga na narinig ang panig ng guro at maintindihan ang pinanggagalingan nito (It is important to hear the teacher's side and understand where they are coming from),” he added.
Quetua was referring to the decision of DepEd as announced by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte during her interview in Cambodia.

ACT welcomed DepEd’s decision noting that aside from managing oversized classes, teachers also have to contend with low salaries, bear the burden of school deficiencies, and take on additional non-teaching tasks.
Focus on discipline
Moreover, the group underscored the need to focus on discipline in schools.
“Sa mga dapat itama lalo na sa paraan ng pagdidisiplina sa mga bata, mahalaga na maglunsad ng psychosocial trainings and interventions bilang bahagi ng suporta at gabay ng ahensya sa mga guro na parehong positibo sa mga guro at bata (To address what needs correcting, especially in the way children are disciplined, it is important to launch psychosocial trainings and interventions as part of the agency's support and guidance for teachers that are equally beneficial for both teachers and students),” Quetua said.

Additionally, ACT pushed for the need for a mechanism that would address issues regarding discipline inside the classroom and ensure support and protection for teachers against false accusations and allegations.
