‘A good curriculum is not enough’

Duterte underscores the importance of having ‘very good’ teachers to implement the MATATAG Curriculum


Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte on Friday, Feb. 16, highlighted the importance of training teachers to ensure the successful implementation of the revised basic education curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 10 or the MATATAG Curriculum.

“We believe that our MATATAG curriculum is a very good one but a good curriculum is not enough, we need very good teachers to teach,” Duterte said during the National Summit of the MATATAG Curriculum Pilot Implementers held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

“The MATATAG curriculum, when implemented well with very good teachers in the field, we can greatly support our learning recovery efforts and help improve student learning outcomes,” she added.

Duterte also underscored the need for “very good regional directors, superintendents, and supervisors to support our teachers to teach the curriculum.”

Moreover, Duterte emphasized the “need to work together” to enable the successful teaching and learning of the MATATAG curriculum.

“Simply put, we need to implement the curriculum well. We need to remind everyone to work together,” she added.

The Summit gathered participants from the 35 schools in seven regions where the MATATAG Curriculum is being piloted.

Based on the data from DepEd, 385 participating teachers and 8,294 participating learners in the pilot implementation of the revised curriculum.
