The water level of La Mesa Dam in Quezon City is nearing its spilling level, with areas in Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela (Camanava) potentially affected if the dam spills, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Saturday night, Aug. 8.
PAGASA hydrologist Sonia Serrano said La Mesa Dam’s water level stood at 79.53 meters as of 7 p.m., still below its 80.15-meter spilling level.
“Wala pa naman po siya sa ating spilling level po kasi ang ating spilling level para sa La Mesa Dam ay nasa 80.15 meters pero malapit-lapit na rin po (It has not yet reached its spilling level because the spilling level of La Mesa Dam is 80.15 meters, but it is already getting close),” she said in a DZBB interview.
According to the hydrologist, water from La Mesa Dam would flow toward Tullahan if the dam spills, with areas in Casanova potentially affected.
“Itong La Mesa Dam kapag nag-spill po ito, sa Tullahan po ang tugon po nito. Ang maapektuhan po nito ay ‘yung Camanava natin (If La Mesa Dam spills, the water will flow toward Tullahan. Our Camanava area will be affected),” Serrano said.
She urged the public to remain vigilant over the conditions of waterways.
“Kailangan po natin mag-ingat at maging alerto sa mga nagiging sitwasyon ng mga kailugan po (We need to exercise caution and remain alert to the conditions of our waterways),” she said.
Meanwhile, Serrano said the water level of Angat Dam reached 159.37 meters as of 7 p.m.
She said its water level is expected to continue rising in the coming days due to rains brought by the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
“Inaasahan pa rin po natin itong tataas pa rin sa mga susunod na araw dahil po sa inaasahan natin pag-ulan pa dala ng habagat (We still expect it to rise further in the coming days because of the rains we expect from the habagat),” Serrano said.
Earlier, Ambuklao and Binga dams in Benguet released water through four gates each as heavy rains continued to affect the province.
