Adamson showed great promise despite its shocking Season 88 exit after bowing to University of Santo Tomas, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19, in the stepladder opener of the UAAP Season women’s volleyball tournament before a massive crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, April 29.
This year saw spiker Shai Nitura and playmaker Fhei Sagaysay thrive individually as they are set to receive the Most Valuable Player and Best Setter plums, respectively.
Francis Mordi also took on a huge role in helping the Lady Falcons record a 9-5 slate at the end of the elimination for an assured third spot ahead of the stepladder.
Though it missed out on a podium finish for the third consecutive season, the San Marcelino-based squad achieved its best finish since Season 85, and head coach JP Yude has no doubt Adamson’s future is bright with Nitura, Sagaysay, and Mordi having three more playing years.
“No. 1 thing, from the past two years, ‘yong improvement ng team ando’n. The future is bright because we know our players are always hungry na makuha ‘yong goal namin,” said Yude.
“I think kailangan pang trabahuhin para mas makuha ‘yong bright na future,” added Yude, who was tapped to take over the women’s program in 2023.
It was a stunning loss for Adamson, which, on paper, was the favorite squad to prevail after dealing two straight-set losses to UST during the elimination.
For Yude, however, morale remains high as he views the setback as a valuable lesson for him and his young squad, who are still chasing their elusive UAAP crown.
“For me, ‘yong takeaways talaga ‘yong mga ups and downs during the season, and, especially, sa mga pangit na pangyayari. ‘Yon talaga ang takeaway sakin kasi do’n nabi-build ‘yong character,” said Yude.
“And as a team ‘yong maturity… ‘yon ‘yong kailangan pang ma-develop. Lalo si Shai as a leader of the team for the coming years... kailangan pang maging mature enough pa at sa other aspects,” he added.
