University of Santo Tomas finally cracked Adamson’s code just in time, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19, to advance to the stepladder Round 2 of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, April 29.
Heading into the crucial tiff as the underdogs, the Golden Tigresses, powered by Angge Poyos who delivered the finishing blow, drew strength from their setbacks and clamped down Shai Nitura and the Lady Falcons with suffocating defense to complete their quick revenge.
Aside from avenging its two straight-set losses to the JP Yude-mentored crew in the eliminations, UST arranged a stepladder clash against reigning champion National University this Saturday, May 2, at the same venue.
Adamson, on the other hand, entered the exit gates with a 9-5 card at third – its best elimination run since Season 85.
“Una sa lahat, thank you Lord, credit sa mga players namin. Actually, ‘di naman todo-todo ‘yong training kasi mas inaral namin ‘yong galaw ta’s ‘yong communication namin,” said UST head coach Shaq Delos Santos. “‘Yong effort nila napaka-importante, talagang trinabaho nila.”
Poyos dazzled on both ends for UST with 17 points on 15 spikes and two aces along with eight excellent digs and seven excellent receptions, while Reg Jurado posted a double-double effort of 13 points and 14 receptions. Cassie Carballo logged 10 excellent sets, three digs, and two points.
Jonna Perdido impressed as well after listing 10 points, 10 digs, and seven receptions, while Avril Bron chipped in seven points. Skipper Detdet Pepito, league’s two-time Best Libero, displayed her fine form anew with 16 digs, nine receptions, and four excellent sets.
Nitura, who is nearing her MVP coronation, registered 13 points, seven digs, and 11 receptions, while Francis Mordi backed her up with 11 points, four digs, and three receptions for Adamson with Fhei Sagaysay also logging 11 excellent sets and four digs.
Though they suffered another quick exit, the Lady Falcons remained a threat in Season 89 as Nitura, Mordi, and Sagaysay were currently in their second year.
