Shai Nitura is poised to make history for Adamson as its first-ever Most Valuable Player in this UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament.
Nitura, 21, led the MVP race in dominant fashion after tallying 98.511 statistical points to top the women’s division, with teammate Frances Mordi (82.766) emerging as her closest pursuer for the league’s top individual honor.
Nitura, an Alas Pilipinas standout who captured the Rookie of the Year award last year, led the scoring department after the elimination round for the second straight year with 284 total points coming from 248 attacks, 24 blocks, and 12 aces, She was also third in spiking efficiency with 38.15 percent success rate and seventh in service by averaging 0.26 aces each frame.
She also entered within the Top 10 of receptions and digs percentage, where she ended up as fourth (44.48 percent efficiency) and eighth (2.11 digs per set), respectively. These contributions from Nitura boosted the Lady Falcons’ first Final Four berth in three seasons.
The Lady Falcons ended up with a 9-5 slate at solo third to enter Round 2 of the stepladder, where they look forward to facing the victor between the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses or the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws who are clashing in a playoff for No. 4 seat this Saturday, April 25, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Following behind Adamson’s lethal duo in Nitura and Mordi in the MVP hunt were De La Salle’s Angel Canino (79.808), UST’s Angge Poyos (77.600), and their fellow Lady Falcon Fhei Sagaysay (71.064).
Also in Top 10 are National University’s Sam Cantada (66.786), who, as expected, claimed the Rookie of the Year honor, University of the East’s Khy Cepada (64.773), La Salle’s Amie Provido (63.846) and Shevana Laput (63.462), and UST’s Reg Jurado (58.800).
Aside from the MVP plum, Nitura is set to bag her first Best Outside Spiker trophy with 303 ranking points (RP), besting Alas teammate Canino (272).
For other individual accolades, Laput will hoist her second consecutive Best Outside Spiker trophy. Provido (206 RPs) and University of the Philippines’ Niña Ytang (181 RPs), on the other hand, are going to retain their awards. Sagaysay will be feted as the Best Setter, while NU’s Shaira Jardio will take home the Best Libero honor.
Meanwhile, Alas Pilipinas and UST ace Josh Ybañez added another feather to his glowing cap as he is set to receive an elusive third MVP crown in the men’s side.
Ybañez, 23, proved he had fully overcome his Season 87 injury setback, capturing his third MVP award – and becoming the first Golden Spiker to do so – after amassing 90.192 statistical points (SP).
The General Santos City native secured himself as well his third Best Outside Spiker plum, beating NU’s Michaelo Buddin. Other awardees were Leo Ordiales (Best Opposite Spiker) of the Bulldogs, La Salle Issa Ousseini and FEU’s Lirick Mendoza as Best Middle Blockers.
Also to be feted are the Tamaraws elite playmaker Ariel Cacao (Best Setter) and his teammate Vennie Ceballos (Best Libero).
