MVP contenders Nitura, Petallo clash as Adamson eyes semis-clinching win vs FEU

Shai Nitura and Gerz Petallo clash one more time this Season 88 when Adamson seeks payback and a Final Four-clinching win over Far Eastern University in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila Saturday, April 18.
Both squads plunge into the crucial tiff with much at stake as the Lady Falcons (8-5) try to book a semis spot which they last achieved in Season 85. The Lady Tamaraws, meanwhile, are hoping to take their eighth win in 13 games to solidify their bid for the place in the knockout rounds.
The much-awaited match is set at 5 p.m., with also-ran teams Ateneo (1-11) and University of the East (0-13) opening the women’s action at 11 a.m.
A win for Adamson would assure its place in the semis, while an FEU victory would create a two-way tie with the former. There is also a chance for a three-team tie if University of Santo Tomas (7-5) prevails over the University of the Philippines (5-8) in their game Sunday, April 19.
Points will decide the tie, with all three teams needing straight-set wins to boost their Final Four hopes. But if De La Salle (13-0) completes a sweep, the league will shift to a stepladder format instead of holding a regular semis.
Determined to redeem themselves in this second round, Nitura and the Lady Falcons look to exact their revenge against the Tin Ubaldo-led Lady Tamaraws, who dealt them a 22-25, 30-28, 25-17, 25-20 loss in their first-round meeting last March 1, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Aside from Nitura and Frances Mordi, two of the leading contenders for the MVP award, setter Fhei Sagaysay, who has been instrumental in orchestrating Adamson’s offense, braces for a tough test against FEU counterpart Ubaldo, a veteran playmaker guided by former national team setter Tina Salak.
“Hindi naman po lahat [magiging] madali, pero ‘yon nga, sinu-surrender ko lang po kay God ‘yong resulta. Siya na po ang bahala and ‘yong preparation namin for FEU is talagang pagtutuunan ko ng pansin,” said Sagaysay, also a frontrunner for the Best Setter plum.
The lethal duo of Nitura-Mordi, Sagaysay and the JP Yude-mentored crew, which are coming from a sweep win over the State U, take a daunting task of besting an FEU side which flaunts the likes of Petallo, Ubaldo, Faida Bakanke, Cla Loresco, Jaz Ellarina, Aly Devosora, and Lovely Lopez.
The Recto-based squad, also fresh off a four-set triumph against UP, tries to repeat on Adamson, ahead of its final elims game against Ateneo next Wednesday April 22, for a stronger hold of a semis position.
Meanwhile, the Blue Eagles and the Lady Warriors, who both endured a straight-set defeat to the league-leading Lady Spikers in their previous contest, eye to end their respective losing skids, especially UE which is on the brink of suffering two straight winless seasons.
Ana Hermosura, Alex Montoro, Zel Tsunashima, Dona De Leon, and Jihan Chuatico lead Ateneo, while UE banks on Khy Cepada, Nessa Bangayan, Bea Zamudio, and Angge Reyes for a breakthrough win.
In men’s action, Ateneo (7-5) is out to extend its win streak to three against the hapless (3-10) in their 9 a.m. collision, while FEU (11-1) looks to tighten the grip on the No. 1 spot when it faces Adamson (3-10) at 3 p.m.
