The untouchable De La Salle University extended its hot streak as it rolled past University of the East, 25-20, 25-18, 25-15, to move one win away from sweeping the elimination round and earning an outright Finals berth in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila Wednesday, April 15.
The Lady Spikers cruised to their 13th consecutive victory with Angel Canino and Shevana Laput leading their offense with the help from their young guns, repelling the Lady Warriors who suffered their 27th straight loss which started since the Season 87 opening round.
Apart from an immaculate 13-0 tally and an assured twice-to-beat edge, the Taft-based squad could bag the Finals ticket if it is able to repeat against reigning champion National University (9-3) in their rematch next Wednesday, April 22, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
It could be remembered that the last time La Salle achieved an outright Finals ticket was way back Season 76 (2014) where it unfortunately fell short for the crown after bowing to Alyssa Valdez and the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
“Of course, we’re super happy like our coach said we were given this opportunity to thrive and to show what they’ve been working so hard in training,” said Laput, who posted 12 points on 10 attacks, one block, and one ace with four digs.
“So happy for the girls, and you could see on the court, they were enjoying themselves… and I hope this gives that little bit of confidence, especially as we end [the second round],” she added.
Canino also scored 12 on top of 10 excellent digs and seven excellent receptions, while Lilay De Castillo and Amie Provido chipped in nine and eight points, respectively, for La Salle. Shane Reterta and Mikee Santos also contributed five points each. Eshana Nunag logged nine excellent sets with two points and one dig.
Despite another UE’s setback, Khy Cepada still impressed with 13 points, four digs, and 10 receptions, while Nessa Bangayan chalked 10 points and six digs in a losing cause. The Lady Warriors try to score a breakthrough win when they face the also-ran Blue Eagles (1-11) this Saturday, April 18, at the same venue.
Meanwhile, the UE men's team spoiled De La Salle’s semis bid after carving out a 25-21, 28-26, 26-24 win that snapped its back-to-back losses.
Raquim Aceron paced the Red Warriors’ onslaught en route to a straight-set victory which not only hiked their record to 3-10, but also put the Green Spikers out of Final Four contention.
The victory broke UE's 17-game losing streak to La Salle, which dropped to 5-8. Also, the result locked the semis cast that will feature Far Eastern University (11-1), reigning champion National University (10-2), University of Santo Tomas (8-4), and Ateneo (7-5), which is set for its Final Four return as its last appearance was in Season 81.
Aceron took the spotlight for the Jumbo Dimaculangan-mentored crew after listing 19 points on 17 attacks and two blocks that came with 22 excellent receptions and three excellent digs, while Roy Piojo and Xjhann Camaymayan chipped in 14 and nine points, respectively.
Issa Ouisseini powered the Green Spikers with 16 points, while Yoyong Mendoza and Eugene Gloria combined for 21 points with the latter adding 21 excellent receptions and seven excellent digs which all went down the drain.
Up next for UE is Ateneo (7-5) this Saturday, April 15, at the same venue, while La Salle looks to finish its campaign on a high when it battles NU on Sunday, April 19, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
