University of Santo Tomas stars Angge Poyos and Josh Ybañez took the spotlight after emerging as the frontrunners for the Most Valuable Player plums in Season 88 volleyball tournaments.
The two power-hitting players from España were ahead of the race for the highest individual award with Poyos and Ybañez topping the statistical points (SPs) in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.
Poyos, who was named as Season 86’s Rookie of the Year, leads the pack in the distaff side after she accumulated 156.22 SPs, a 9.322 edge over her closest pursuer in fellow ROY awardee, Adamson’s Shai Nitura (147.20).
De La Salle’s Angel Canino (142.80), Adamson’s Frances Mordi (139.20), and Far Eastern University’s Gerz Petallo (137.50) completed the Top Five.
Apart from her lead, the Balilihan, Bohol native, who was also first in spiking efficiency with a 39.92 percent success rate, finished as the third highest scorer with 111 points off 95 attacks, 12 blocks, and four aces, behind the Lady Falcons’ lethal duo in Nitura (136) and Mordi (129).
Poyos, with the help of Reg Jurado, Avril Bron, Jonna Perdido, Cassie Carballo and Detdet Pepito steered the Golden Tigresses from a lackluster 2-3 start into a decent 4-3 tally entering the second round.
They shared third place with the Lady Falcons (4-3) and the Lady Tamaraws (4-3) in the standings.
Meanwhile, all three members of Alas Pilipinas starred in the men’s category with two-time UAAP MVP Ybañez looking to make it three after spearheading the race with 158.00 SPs. He outpaced NU main gunners in Buds Buddin (153.75) and Leo Ordiales (152.08).
Ybañez unloaded 121 points on 110 kills, seven aces, and four blocks to power the Golden Spikers to a 5-2 run in the first half of the meet. They tied with the Bulldogs (5-2) and both are trailing behind the unscathed FEU Tamaraws (7-0).
