CEBU CITY – The death toll in the landfill collapse in Barangay Binaliw here has increased to four as the search and rescue operations entered the third day on Saturday, Jan. 10.
With more than 30 still believed to be trapped under the pile of garbage, Mayor Nestor Archival emphasized that the efforts are still focusing on search and rescue operations.
Archival reported that signs of life were detected in specific areas that requires “continued careful excavation.”
The mayor added that to hasten search and rescue efforts, a 50-ton crane was deployed in the area.
The pile of garbage collapsed past 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, burying some houses and an office of Prime Waste Solutions, the private company that operates the landfill.
Aside from the four fatalities, 12 victims were also brought to hospitals.
Unstable debris and acetylene risks are hampering rescue efforts, Archival said.
Adjustments to the security perimeter and controlled access were enforced to ensure safety while rescue teams search for survivors, the mayor added.
Archival said regular briefings are being conducted to provide psychosocial support to families of the victims.
“Power restoration, sanitation facilities, rest areas for rescuers, internet connectivity, and proper housekeeping at the site are being addressed concurrently,” said Archival.
While the rescue efforts are going at the dumpsite, the mayor said several measures are being explored to address looming garbage collection issues.
