The camps of three national candidates whose huge campaign posters hang along the southbound lane of North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) have been advised to take down their materials within three days.
Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia said Friday, Feb. 28, that the poll body issued a notice to the three candidates, who he did not identify.
“Merong tatlo don. At yung tatlong yun ay sinulatan na po namin at umaasa po tayo in 72 hours they will remove these campaign materials, (There were three candidates there. And we issued letters to them and we're hoping that in 72 hours, they will remove these campaign materials),” he said during Comelec’s regular election briefing.
Garcia said that the poll body has been active in issuing notices to candidates and party-lists that violate campaign rules, particularly those related to campaign materials.
So far, everybody is compliant, except for one candidate who he also did not identify.
Garcia said this particular candidate refused to acknowledge the Comelec’s notice to explain. Thus, the poll body is planning to file election offense charges against the candidate.
"[Removing campaign materials] is highly symbolic. Kasi kung 'di natin sila kaya mapatino dyan mismo sa pagpapaskil ng campaign materials, paano pa kaya doon sa compliance nila (Because if we're not able to discipline them in their move to post campaign materials illegally, how about their compliance)?" he said.
