The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Monday, Jan. 6, that it has organized training sessions for teachers of core subjects to help improve learning outcomes among students.
In a statement, DepEd said the training sessions for English, Science, and Mathematics (ESM) teachers, as well as learning sessions for students and their parents to support school activities, are part of its ongoing efforts to improve academic performance.
“We are equipping our teachers with cutting-edge tools and strategies to provide world-class instruction in English, Science, and Math,” DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said.
“By empowering our educators, we are not only enhancing classroom learning but also preparing our learners to excel academically and meet the challenges of an ever-evolving world,” he added.
DepEd explained that the training sessions are made possible through partnerships with Khan Academy and Frontlearners.
Through these sessions, teachers are expected to improve their ability to conduct effective learning sessions, resulting in better academic performance aligned with international standards.
The series of activities begins on Jan. 6, with Regional ESM supervisors preparing to create their classes on the Khan Academy platform. ESM teachers will also create their respective accounts to join the sessions.
This activity will be followed by an exam on the platform for all ESM teachers in each region.
DepEd noted that after the training and exams, School Division Superintendents (SDS) will identify teacher-trainers for each subject.
These teacher-trainers will serve as facilitators for Learning Sessions and Socio-emotional Learning (SEL) activities for learners in their respective divisions.
Starting Jan. 10, DepEd’s Curriculum and Teaching Strand will circulate Learning Sessions and SEL guides to field offices. These materials will be used to train ESM teacher-trainers from Jan. 13 to 15.
After completing the training, DepEd said Learning Sessions for learners will be implemented over an eight-week period, from Jan. 16 to March 10.
These sessions, DepEd added, will include orientations on using the DepEd Learning Management System (LMS), Khan Academy, and Frontlearners platforms, as well as assessment activities, coaching, and SEL sessions.
