The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said at least 19 areas across the country may experience a “danger” level heat index of 42 degrees Celsius (°C) or higher on Sunday, April 13.

PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said the easterlies, or warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean will continue to be the dominant weather system that will bring partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over most of the country.

However, scattered light to heavy rains may affect Zamboanga Peninsula, Palawan, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

In its forecast, PAGASA said San Ildefonso in Bulacan; Sangley Point in Cavite City, Cavite province; and Virac Catanduanes may record the highest heat index at 44°C.

Other areas expected to experience heat indices between 42°C and 43°C include Dagupan City in Pangasinan; Ambulong in Tanauan, Batangas; Cuyo in Palawan; Masbate City in Masbate; Roxas City in Capiz; Iloilo City in Iloilo; Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City, Metro Manila; Bacnotan in La Union; Echague in Isabela; Baler in Aurora; Cubi Pt. in Subic Bay, Olongapo City, Pampanga; Camiling in Tarlac; San Jose in Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Princesa City in Palawan; Dumangas in Iloilo; and Catarman in Northern Samar.

According to PAGASA, heat indices between 42°C and 51°C fall under the danger classification.

At this level, people are at increased risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Prolonged exposure to such conditions could lead to heatstroke.
