DepEd to comply with Marcos' decision on reverting to old school calendar

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday, May 6, expressed its commitment to follow President Marcos' decision regarding the reversion to the old June-to-March school calendar.

DepEd Undersecretary and Spokesperson Michael Poa, in a message to reporters, confirmed that the agency had already submitted a proposal to the Office of the President (OP) regarding the reversion of the school calendar.

“In our letter to OP regarding DepEd’s proposal for the reversion to the June-March SY [school year], we already stated that we commit to abiding by the president’s decision on the matter,” Poa said.

Poa said that DepEd’s latest stand on reverting to the old school calendar was also announced during a Senate hearing last April 30.

“The most aggressive option I mentioned [during the] hearing would be ending SY 2024-2025 on March 31, 2025,” Poa said. With this possible adjustment, the next school year would be composed of around 165 school days.

The extreme heat experienced nationwide has been forcing schools to suspend face-to-face classes and shift to Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs) since April.

As of May 6, data from DepEd showed that 7,372 out of 47,678 schools nationwide had shifted to ADMs.

Due to the impact of class suspensions on the health and learning of students and teachers, various groups have been urging DepEd to return to the pre-pandemic calendar where the school year for schools that offer basic education starts in June and ends in March.

With the old calendar, students and teachers will be on “summer break” during April and May --- considered among the hottest months of the year.
