Following announcements to schools to shift to distance learning, a teachers’ group on Friday, April 12, urged the Department of Education (DepEd) again to revert to the pre-pandemic school calendar.
“We reiterate that we need a more strategic response by promptly reverting to the old school calendar,” Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) said in a statement.
TDC issued the statement in response to DepEd’s latest advisory for all public schools nationwide to shift to asynchronous classes or distance learning next week, April 15 and 16.

For TDC, DepEd’s latest advisory is a “temporary solution.”
However, the group noted that this is “better than the various and overlapping declarations from field offices and localities on the adjustments to the class schedules due to the intense heat.”
As of April 12, DepEd data showed over 7,000 schools nationwide suspended classes and shifted to Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) due to extreme heat.

On April 11, TDC sent an official letter to the Office of Education Secretary Sara Duterte to formally request to revert to the June-March calendar for the country's public schools beginning in 2025.
“We hope that DepEd will consider the proposal after President Bongbong Marcos himself supports the idea,” TDC said.
