Here's the story behind Michelle Dee's Miss Universe 2023 prelims evening gown

Fashion designer Mark Bumgarner crafts a look that is fit for a future queen

Miss Universe 2023 fever is definitely on the international pageant holds its preliminary competition. Gracing its stage are the 84 hopefuls from different countries, vying to win the pageant's "Force for Good" crown.

For its evening gown segment, the contestants wear their most elegant designer garbs, and among our top favorites is, of course, the Philippines's representative, Michelle Dee. The actress-beauty queen dons a creation by Filipino designer Mark Bumgarner. Elegant and contemporary, the emerald gown features a high neckline, cut-out details, and adorned with thousands of Swarovski crystals.

“For the preliminary, the emerald green color was inspired by Melanie Marquez, Michelle’s mom, when she won Miss International in 1979," Mark said in a post by Miss Universe Philippines. "The evening gown is fully encrusted with three shades of emerald green Swarovski crystals, and contrasted black crystals to give it a different dimension under the light.”

"I wanted it to look like the skin of a green viper– a symbol of power, transformation, and wisdom," he added

Throughout her Miss Universe 2023 journey, Michelle has been championing Filipino fashion with her daily 'fits. Apart from Mark's designs, she has worn pieces courtesy of Filipino designers Chris Nick, Jaz Cerezo, Ulysses Caragayan, and Vin Orias, among others.

The coronation night of Miss Universe 2023 will take place on Nov. 18 (Nov. 19 in the Philippines) at the José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador.
