Duterte addresses death of learner in Rizal; asks teachers to always ensure safety of students
Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Thursday, Oct. 5, addressed the death of a learner in Rizal and reminded teachers to ensure the safety of students who were entrusted to their care at all times.

In her speech for the National Teachers’ Day (NTD) celebration in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, Duterte mentioned an “incident” where a student died after allegedly being slapped by a teacher.
“Initially, we see in the medical certificate that it was brain edema that caused the death of the learner,” Duterte said. “The autopsy is ongoing [and] we are waiting for the result of the autopsy,” she added.
In a statement issued on Oct. 3, the DepEd Schools Division Office of Antipolo City confirmed the death of a student in Peñafrancia Elementary School. The SDO said “appropriate actions” are being undertaken to address the incident.

Leave a 'positive footprint'
During the NTD celebration, Duterte reminded the teachers of their responsibility to ensure the safety of students especially when they are inside school premises.
“Let me just remind you, all our teachers that children are entrusted to your care,” Duterte said.

“Whether it be physical, sexual, verbal abuse --- you don’t do that to children especially those that are entrusted to your care, fully by the community, by their families,” she added.
Duterte also reminded teachers that they are “supposed to take care” of the learners under their care.
“You are supposed to mold them into the best citizens that we can have for the future of our country,” she said. “You are supposed to ensure that they are happy to learn what you are teaching,” she added.
Given this, Duterte urged teachers to “always keep that in mind that whatever you do will affect the life of that child.”
Duterte also reminded teachers to “make sure that your footprint is something that is positive in the life of the child.”
The celebration of the NTD also coincided with the celebration of World Teachers’ Day and the culmination of National Teachers’ Month which started on Sept. 5.
