DepEd confirms death of learner in Antipolo school, probes alleged child abuse

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday, Oct. 3, confirmed the death of a student in a public school in Antipolo City and assured that the concerned school division office (SDO) is “taking appropriate actions” to address the incident.

“We are saddened by the death of our dear learner and we express our deepest condolences and prayers to the bereaved family,” DepEd - Schools Division Office (SDO) of Antipolo City said in a statement.
DepEd Antipolo also assured all concerned that it is “taking appropriate actions to address the alleged child abuse incident” in Peñafrancia Elementary School, Antipolo City.
“We have already forwarded the required Intake Sheet, Incident Report and Narrative Report to the Office of the Regional Director, DepEd Region IV-A CALABARZON, for information and appropriate action,” the SDO said.
The SDO added that as the Disciplining Authority, the Office of the Regional Director has issued an Order designating a Fact-Finding Investigation Team and directing the committee to “conduct immediate, cautious, and comprehensive fact-finding investigation in recognition of the right of both parties to be heard as part of due process.”
“Currently, the school principal has assigned an alternate teacher to handle the classes of the concerned teacher who is on-official leave,” the SDO said.
Meanwhile, DepEd Antipolo said that it has formed a team of selected Registered Guidance Counselors, School Health Nutrition Unit (SHNU) Representatives, Youth Formation Development (YFD) Coordinators, EPS in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, Child Protection Specialist and Focal Person to “help and assist with the possible interventions” like reorientation on Child Protection Policy of all concerned stakeholders, and “debriefing of concerned learners and teachers.”
Despite the incident, DepEd assured that it “recognizes the best interests of our learners as primordial consideration.”
