PNP probes alleged harassment of 2 criminology interns in Cagayan de Oro

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated an investigation into reports that two police officers in Cagayan de Oro City allegedly harassed two female criminology interns inside a police station.
Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., PNP chief, confirmed that the suspects, a police captain and a police corporal assigned to Police Station 7 in Barangay Bulua, were disarmed and placed under the Personnel Holding and Accounting Section of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office.
“We take these allegations seriously. The PNP will ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly, promptly, and without interference, and that appropriate administrative and criminal charges will be pursued if the allegations are substantiated,” Nartatez said in a statement Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The alleged incident occurred on Aug. 8 and involved two 21-year-old female criminology interns undergoing their training at Police Station 7.
The Professional Criminologists Association of the Philippines (PCAP) earlier announced it would pursue legal action that could lead to the revocation of the officers’ licenses.
“We will not tolerate any abuse of authority or conduct that violates the dignity and rights of our interns, civilians, or fellow personnel. Those found responsible will be held accountable,” Nartatez said.
He directed the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PTO-19) and Internal Affairs Service (PNP-IAS) to conduct parallel investigations into the case, which may constitute grave misconduct and could result in dismissal from service of the accused officers.
Meanwhile, the PNP chief said that safeguards were put in place to protect the two alleged victims from intimidation or retaliation.
