Malacañang said Sen. Rodante Marcoleta's health should not be compromised while he remains under court custody, stressing that his medical condition should be left to doctors while questions surrounding his continued hospitalization are matters for the Sandiganbayan.
Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro made the statement after being asked about Marcoleta's continued confinement in a hospital, where he has remained since surrendering to authorities following the issuance of a warrant for his arrest.
The issue has also drawn attention after reports that several prominent personalities had visited the senator during his hospitalization.
“Of course, ang kalusugan kasi ay hindi naman natin puwede 'tong isugal (Of course, we cannot gamble with anyone's health),” Castro said on Monday, July 13.
"Kung ano po ang sinasabi ng mga doktor, kung ano po ang kalusugan ni Sen. Rodante Marcoleta ay dapat din po nating pag-ingatan at ma-monitor kung ano po ang kalagayan niya (Whatever the doctors say and whatever Sen. Rodante Marcoleta's medical condition may be, we must ensure that his health is protected and properly monitored),” she added.
Castro said concerns over Marcoleta's continued hospital stay, including reports that he has been receiving visits from several VIPs, should be addressed by the Sandiganbayan.
"So, kung siya po ay dinadalaw at mukhang mayroon nga pong nagreklamo or umalma dito, nasa pag-uutos na rin po ito ng Sandiganbayan (If he is being visited and there are complaints or objections regarding that, it is already up to the Sandiganbayan to issue the appropriate orders),” she said.
She said the Executive would respect whatever directives the anti-graft court may issue regarding the senator's confinement.
The Sandiganbayan earlier issued a warrant for Marcoleta’s arrest after finding probable cause to proceed with a non-bailable plunder case filed against him and several co-accused regarding the alleged misuse of public funds.
Following his arrest on July 6, Marcoleta was admitted to the Philippine National Police General Hospital (PNPGH) due to fluctuations in blood pressure, mild pneumonia, and degenerative disc disease. While his co-accused have since been committed to the New Quezon City Jail, the Senator remains under hospital confinement.
The senator's continued hospitalization has prompted questions from some quarters over the implementation of the court's order and the conditions of his detention.
