A Philippine cacao farmer has earned silver recognition at the Cacao of Excellence Awards, placing his beans among the best in the world.
In a post on its official Instagram page, Auro Chocolate announced that its farming partner, David dela Serna of Tugbok District in Davao City, was cited after an 18-month blind evaluation process that reviewed 191 entries from cacao producers worldwide. Mark Ocampo, one of the founders and managing directors of Auro Chocolate, is seen in the post receiving the award on David’s behalf at the Cacao of Excellence Awards ceremony in Amsterdam.
The Cacao of Excellence Awards is considered one of the highest distinctions in the sector, with entries undergoing laboratory and sensory evaluation before final judging. Only a select group is recognized.

According to Auro Chocolate, this is the third time one of its farming partners has received the honor, a milestone the company described as a reflection of its long-standing work with growers to improve quality and sustainability.
The recognition spotlights David’s farm in Davao, a region long known as the country’s main cacao-growing area. In recent years, beans from the region have appeared more frequently in international competitions, reflecting the steady work of farmers and post-harvest teams on quality and consistency.
Auro Chocolate has built its reputation on sourcing locally grown cacao and working directly with farmers. The model centers on fermentation training, consistent post-harvest practices, and premium positioning for Philippine beans in the fine chocolate market.
For producers like David, global recognition can translate into stronger market access and better prices. For the industry, it reinforces the case that Filipino cacao can compete with long-established origins.
The announcement on Instagram framed the win as both a personal achievement for the farmer and a shared milestone for the local cacao community. As more Philippine growers gain international citations, the spotlight increasingly turns to the country’s ingredients and the entrepreneurs working to bring them to the world stage.
