A South Korean national wanted in his country for kidnapping has been arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Pasay City.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado identified the fugitive as Jang Seongwoong, 47, who has been in the bureau’s wanted list for deportation since 2021 for being an undesirable alien.
“He was thus arrested on the strength of a deportation warrant which was issued pursuant to the said deportation order, and he has been included in our blacklist which perpetually bans him from re-entering the Philippines,” Viado said.
Jang, who was also found to be overstaying since his arrival in the Philippines on May 1, 2017, was arrested by operatives of the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (BI-FSU) in Pasay City last May 22.
The BI said it acted on the red notice issued in July 2019 by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
“Prior to the Interpol notice a warrant of arrest was issued against Jang by the Daegu district court in Korea for serious physical injury and kidnapping,” the bureau also said.
“Authorities alleged that Jang and his cohorts detained and severely beat their victim, who owe them gambling bets, using a baseball bat which caused the latter to suffer multiple bodily injuries,” it added.
Jang has been ordered detained at the BI’s facility in Taguig City while awaiting deportation.
