Use of see-through bags among measures being considered to ensure safety in Cebu schools
CEBU CITY–Amid the rising incidence of violence in schools across the country, authorities continue to find ways to ensure the safety of campuses.
In Mandaue City, Cebu, one of the security measures being eyed is to require the use of transparent school bags.
Dr. Bianito Dagatan, superintendent of the Department of Education (DepEd) Mandaue City Division, said the use of transparent bags is one of several measures being looked into to strengthen school security and prevent violence.
Walkthrough systems, handheld metal detectors, security cameras and additional security personnel are among the measures being studied, Dagatan said.
“Our assessment in this situation, we are not looking into one solution. All possible solutions will be implemented by our school with the main goal of prevention,” Dagatan said.
Dagatan said measures that will address students’ emotional and mental preparedness are also being looked into.
Stronger coordination with parents, authorities and other stakeholders is also being pushed, the school official added.
One of the schools in Mandaue that is preparing the use of see-through bags is the Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion (CIC).
CIC-Mandaue Director Rotie Gabuya said has already consulted with the Parents-Teachers Association with most parents expressing support for the policy.
Dagatan said at least one public school in Mandaue has already partially enforced the use of transparent bags.
