Weather conditions are expected to generally improve across the country after Tropical Depression Neneng weakened into a low-pressure area (LPA) and exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
As of 3 p.m., the center of the LPA was located 480 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes.
With Neneng weakening and moving away from the country, areas affected by the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” may see improved weather conditions.
Over the next 24 hours, cloudy skies with scattered habagat rains and thunderstorms will prevail over the Ilocos Region, Batanes, Cagayan, and Apayao.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy weather with chances of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, the tropical storm with the international name “Saudel” was located 2,745 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, or outside the PAR, as of 3 p.m.
It maintained maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph. It was moving north-northwestward at 15 kph.
PAGASA said Saudel may enter the northeastern boundary of the PAR between Sunday, Aug. 23, and Monday, Aug. 24.
Once inside, it will be given the local name “Obet.”
It may also enhance the habagat again as it moves closer to the country.
Another LPA, designated as LPA 08h, has also formed east of Mindanao and was located 1,725 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao, as of 3 p.m.
PAGASA said the weather disturbance may merge with Saudel in the coming days.
