Fresh flavors in digital comics: New Filipino webtoon 'Head Over Heels!' blends fashion and romance

The global digital comics space has seen explosive growth in recent years, with romance remaining one of the webtoon industry's primary drivers of user engagement. Entering this competitive landscape is “Head Over Heels!,” a new webtoon offering a distinct, playful take on the genre through vibrant visual storytelling and character design.
Created by 21-year-old Filipino artist Veya Sebastian (known online as friedstrawberry), “Head Over Heels!” follows the budding relationship between Elaine Blossom and Landon Maesse. Sebastian drew thematic inspiration from contrasting culinary flavors to build her leads: Elaine’s bold, sassy personality reflects the tartness and sweetness of a strawberry, while Landon’s design takes cues from black sesame — right down to a mole positioned like a sesame seed.
From Concept to Digital Publication
The concept originated in 2021 as character sketches, but the project shifted into active production in 2024. While recovering from a health setback that kept her at home, Sebastian decided to transition her long-standing concept into a fully realized digital comic.
After launching, the series initially struggled to find traction, recording virtually no views for its first four months. Through consistent social media promotion and regular posting schedules, the series built an active community. The webtoon has since gathered nearly 38,000 views and over 1,500 dedicated followers.
Visual Influences and Reader Interactivity
The series draws artistic inspiration from a hybrid of influences, including Western animation, classic manga, and high-fashion illustration, citing iconic creators like “Paradise Kiss” author Ai Yazawa.
Beyond its romantic comedy tropes, the comic relies heavily on visual storytelling and subtle foreshadowing. Readers actively engage with the updates, using the comment section to analyze panel details, decode visual clues, and project future narrative arcs.
For digital platforms, this level of reader interaction highlights the evolving nature of webcomics, where serialized delivery and platform accessibility allow creators to build interactive audiences directly around their work.
