The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday, Aug. 18, is monitoring two low-pressure areas (LPAs), one of which has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres said LPA 08f was located 1,115 kilometers east of Northern Luzon, or inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), as of 3 a.m.
Torres said the weather disturbance’s chance of developing has increased from medium to high.
Should it develop into a tropical cyclone while inside the PAR, PAGASA will name it “Neneng.”
The second disturbance, LPA 08g, was located 295 kilometers west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, or outside the PAR.
Torres said LPA 08g has a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone.
However, it is not expected to enter the PAR as it moves away from the country.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon or “habagat” continues to affect Luzon and Visayas, bringing stronger rains over the western sections, including Metro Manila.
For Tuesday, PAGASA forecast 100 to 200 millimeters, or heavy to intense rainfall, over Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro.
Moderate to heavy rainfall ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters may also affect Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, and Antique.
On Wednesday, 100 to 200 millimeters of rainfall may be recorded over Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
Meanwhile, Ilocos Sur, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Oriental Mindoro may receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall.
By Thursday, 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall is forecast over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, and Occidental Mindoro.
PAGASA warned that rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas.
The effects of the rains may also be worsened by significant rainfall that has already accumulated in some areas in recent days.
The weather bureau advised the public to remain alert for possible flooding and landslides, particularly in areas that have been experiencing prolonged rainfall.
