I see an uncanny parallelism, not facially, however, between actress Candy Pangilinan and presidential spokesman Claire Castro. Listen closely to their speaking voices, the manner by which they enunciate the words that tumble out effortlessly from their mouths. Even the lightning speed and the high pitch by which they speak.

Such a close similarity between the two ladies’ demeanor can be mined by Candy into a political comedy material. The veteran actress, who’s a natural comedian, can take on a Claire Castro-inspired character in one of her acts. She’s bound to have a hit on her hands.

If this were in the 80s and 90s, Tessie Tomas would have jumped the gun on everyone else in creating a Castro-inspired spoof. I actually caught Tessie doing a brief Claire Castro sketch in a conversation with Boy Abunda on his GMA talk program, "Fast Talk..."

Known for her Meldita impersonations (after First Lady Imelda Marcos) and other comical characters like Amanda Pineda and Boni Buendia, she was hilarious as usual.

By the way, heard that Tessie may just make a comeback on the live scene with a new comedy material, this time, in partnership with her New York-based son, Robin.

The timing may just be perfect as theater attendance has been on the upswing while cinema goers have been dwindling in great numbers.

Have you also noticed that ticket prices to theatrical performances and concerts have become so expensive, running into thousands per admission? The talent fees of concert performers have also skyrocketed beyond belief, sending film actors into fits of jealousy. It used to be the other way around.

The live scene is booming, it is said. People are going out to eat, and be entertained by live shows. They’re not watching our movies. Note that a number of movie screens in cineplexes have been dismantled to transition into more lucrative establishments.

Now, I look forward to Candy Pangilinan creating her own sketch of the highly visible undersecretary of information. Think about it, Candy.

Acknowledged for her acting skills whether in straight drama or comedy, Candy is, unfortunately, one of our underrated actors.
