Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon mocked Vice President Sara Duterte's defense team after it cried foul over a Facebook post from a fellow prosecutor during Vice President Sara Duterte's Senate impeachment trial Wednesday, Aug. 12.

At the same time, Ridon asked the Senate impeachment court being presided over by Senator-judge Francis "Chiz" Escudero to pay no heed to this complaint from the defense panel.

"Ramdam ko yung pag-iyak, ramdam ko yung pighati, ramdam ko yung hinagpis ng depensa dito po sa pag-reklamo nila," Ridon said in a press conference after the trial.

(I feel the crying, I feel the sorrow, I feel the grief of the defense here in their complaint.)

At the tail end of the Wednesday's hearing, Duterte's lead defense counsel Sheila Sison made a manifestation wherein she assailed prosecutor Amando Virgil Ligutan's Facebook post earlier that day. She said her complaint had to do with proprietary and decorum among the lawyers.

Sison framed Ligutan's post as a reference to defense lawyer Kristine Ferrer's ongoing cross-examination at that time.

Ridon took up the cudgels for Ligutan, a private practitioner from Cebu who was tapped by the House prosecutors.

"Dalawa lang po yung tanong: Ito po ba ay may pinangalanan? Pangalawa, is it based on the merits? I don't think so. Kasi po yung sub judice rule po ang pinag-uusapan po dito, talking about the merits of the case," he said.

(Only two questions: Was anyone named? Second, is it based on the merits? I don’t think so. Because what is being discussed here is the sub judice rule, talking about the merits of the case.)

There was nothing sub judice about Ligutan's post, according to Ridon. "But what was Atty. Ligutan actually talking about? He was basically stating a principle of law on misleading questions."

"So, kung naiyak ho ang depensa, kawawa naman sila, hindi ho ba? (So if the defense cried, then pity them, right?) But it is not within the sub judice rule. So, I think it is out of place," the firebrand Bicol Saro solon said.

"Dapat itabi nung pong presiding officer, ito pong pag-iyak ng depensa dito po sa bagay po na ito," he added.

(The presiding officer should set aside this crying of the defense on this matter.)

Escudero said he would make a ruling on Sison's manifestation on Monday, Aug. 17.

"But again, we will respect the determination and decision of the Senate impeachment court on yung pong mga (on the) allowable utterances and statements of the parties.

"But it is very important to set clear--Mahalaga po sa publiko na maunawaan po yung actual na detalye nung pong araw-araw, oras-oras, linggu-linggo po na itinatakbo po ng paglilitis pong ito," Ridon said.

(But it is very important to set clear—It is important for the public to understand the actual details of the daily, hourly, weekly proceedings of this trial.)

Ridon says ordinary Filipinos must know why every piece of evidence in Vice President Duterte's trial is important. He say prosecutors and defense lawyers are able to provide context outside the courtroom.

"So, very important po na ma-strike po yung balance dito po sa bagay po na ito (So, it is very important to strike the balance here). Because we do not want a trial that is divorced from the understanding of the public." Kasi (Because) we do not want a trial that is divorced from the understanding of the public," he noted.
