Margarita Patrice Sy Penson is equally at home in two very different worlds. As a supply chain professional, she works with the structured digital data of goods and logistics. As an abstract expressionist artist, she turns to bold brushstrokes, kinetic movement and vibrant colors to translate raw emotions and fleeting experiences onto canvas.
That artistic practice is currently being presented in Melbourne, Australia, where six of Margarita's acrylic compositions are part of an exhibition and art fair at Quadrant Gallery alongside five fellow artists. During the weekend of Aug. 22, Penson's body of work will become the gallery's main feature.
Among the works on display are "Ekpyrosis" and "'Chak Phra Afternoon," two paintings marked by textured layers of red, rust and burnt umber. Their warm, luminous tones give the compositions a sense of movement and intensity. "Chak Phra Afternoon" has a particularly personal origin. According to Margarita, the painting was sparked by an involuntary rush of sensory recall while she was in a Bangkok restaurant during an exhilarating festival.

"I aim to capture and connect a tempo of feelings and fleeting mundane sentiments with viewers," She says of her work.
Her palette shifts in other works, moving from the fiery reds and orange glows into cooler grays and blues. Using both brush and palette knife, Margarita creates compositions that move into open areas of white, producing a calmer mood that invites viewers toward quiet reflection.
A freewheeling traveler, Margarita is based in Manila and comes from an artistic family. She is the granddaughter of writer and painter Maria Lourdes de Vera, one of the country's few exponents of surrealism.
Her Melbourne presentation features works completed in 2026, including "Flow I," a 70-by-50-centimeter acrylic on canvas; "Ekpyrosis," measuring 50 by 60 centimeters; and "Chak Phra Afternoon," also measuring 50 by 60 centimeters. The three works offer different expressions of Penson's use of color, texture and movement.

Margarita's artistic activities continue when she returns to the Philippines. From Aug. 25-28, she will participate in the back-to-back exhibition "Pamana at Sining ng Pamantasan sa Gunita nina Amorsolo at Manansala" at the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas.
For an artist working between the precision of a supply chain career and the freedom of abstract expressionism, Margarita's current exhibitions offer a look at how different experiences can find their way onto canvas. In Melbourne, six works bring her energetic compositions to a wider audience, while her upcoming Manila exhibition will offer local viewers another opportunity to encounter her developing body of work.
