President Marcos has ordered government agencies to ensure that assistance reaches all residents affected by Tropical Storm Luis, Typhoon Maymay, and the southwest monsoon, or habagat, as the government recorded 12 casualties from the combined weather disturbances.

Marcos convened a situation briefing at Malacañang with Cabinet officials on Monday, Aug. 10, to assess the impact of the weather systems and direct immediate response and relief operations in affected areas.

In a press briefing, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said Marcos specifically directed agencies to reach affected residents in remote areas and ensure that assistance also reaches those who had already returned home from evacuation centers.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), together with local governments, has provided P39.37 million in assistance to affected residents in several regions.

The assistance has reached communities in Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Cordillera Administrative Region, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula.

Thousands deployed

Castro said in her press briefing that the government has deployed 3,841 personnel for possible search-and-rescue operations, while another 4,392 personnel and 943 pieces of equipment remain on standby for immediate deployment if needed.

Fourteen air assets and one naval asset from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) have also been deployed, with additional resources from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Philippine Navy, and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on standby.

The DSWD has distributed 54,370 family food packs, 2,722 ready-to-eat food items, 23 other food items, and 1,376 non-food items, while nearly P1 million in financial assistance has been released under its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program.

Nationwide, the agency has nearly five million family food packs and 245,474 non-food items ready for distribution, along with P1.61 billion in standby funds.

Flood-control work continues

Marcos also ordered the continued implementation of measures to reduce the impact of flooding, including sustained work in areas affected by the recent rains.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon earlier inspected flood-control initiatives in Las Piñas, while the agency continued dredging operations, installation of high-density polyethylene pipes, and operation of pumping stations to prevent rivers and waterways from overflowing.

Castro said Marcos also called on local governments and residents to work together in addressing flooding, including through proper waste disposal, as part of a whole-of-nation approach.
