1 dead, over 26,000 affected by bad weather in La Union

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — At least one person was reported dead while more than 26,000 individuals were affected by flooding, landslides, and other incidents in La Union due to the combined effects of the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay.

‎The provincial disaster office said Saturday, Aug. 8, that the fatality was  a 45-year-old man who  drowned in an irrigation canal in Barangay Rimos 1, Luna.
‎
‎As of 5 a.m. Saturday, the La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) recorded 46 flooding incidents in Bauang, Agoo, Bangar, Santo Tomas, Naguilian, and San Fernando City caused by Luis and Maymay.
‎
‎Four landslides were recorded in Sudipen, Naguilian, and Luna, as well as two mudslides and one rockslide in San Fernando City.
‎
‎A total of 8,366 families or 26,612 individuals in 192 barangays in 17 municipalities were affected by inclement weather.
‎
‎Five-hundred eighty-eight families or 1,756 individuals are  staying in 50 evacuation centers while 354 families or 1,161 individuals are staying outside  evacuation centers.
‎
‎Nineteen houses were partially damaged in San Fernando City, San Juan, Agoo, Bauang, Caba, Naguilian, and Santo Tomas and two totally in Bauang and Naguilian.

‎Local government units and the provincial government of La Union have provided assistance amounting to P913,981.24 to affected residents.
‎
‎Initial damage assessment placed agricultural losses at P12.91 million, infrastructure damage at P3.4 million, and livestock losses at P205,950.
‎
‎Authorities distributed  2,900 food packs to affected residents through 16 local government units.
‎
‎The PDRRMO said  damage assessment remains ongoing and the figures may still increase as reports from affected areas continue to be consolidated.
