The House of Representatives has adopted a resolution honoring Alex Eala for her recent, historic Wimbledon breakthrough even as the Filipino tennis sensation continued her remarkable season with another statement victory on the world stage.
House Resolution (HR) No. 1190 commends Eala for becoming the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16 of a Grand Slam singles tournament during this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
Congressmen adopted the measure in plenary during session Wednesday, July 29.
The congressional tribute came as Eala stunned defending Washington Open champion Leylah Fernandez to advance to the quarterfinals. This extended what has become the finest season by a Filipino tennis player.
The resolution, introduced by Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III, Majority Leader Sandro Marcos and Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan, recognized Eala’s historic Wimbledon campaign, highlighted by victories over Renata Zarazúa, Maya Joint and defending champion Iga Świątek before she bowed out in a hard-fought fourth-round match against Jasmine Paolini.
The House also cited Eala’s outstanding grass-court season, which included her Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 125 title in Birmingham and a semifinal finish at the Berlin Tennis Open.
It says her achievements have elevated Philippine tennis on the international stage.
The resolution traced the 21-year-old Eala’s rise from a young aspiring tennis player to one of the sport’s brightest stars.
It recalled her early successes, including winning the Li Na Inspiration Award at age 11 and the prestigious Les Petits As tournament in France at age 12 before earning a scholarship to the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, where she trained and graduated in 2023.
The resolution likewise recognized Eala’s steady progression through the international ranks, and cited her titles at the 2021 French Open girls’ doubles, the 2022 US Open girls’ singles, the 2025 Lexus Eastbourne Open and the 2025 Guadalajara 125 Open. It said these achievements laid the foundation for her historic Wimbledon breakthrough this year.
The House noted that, at just 21 years old, Eala has brought immense pride and honor to the nation and continues to inspire young Filipinos to pursue excellence through dedication and determination.
The resolution likewise echoed President Marcos' earlier remark that Eala is “just getting started,” alongside the latter's personal motto, “Kapag lumago, hindi na hihinto (Relentless once it flourishes)."
When Eala advanced to the Wimbledon Round of 16 earlier this month, Speaker Dy hailed the young Filipina for inspiring the nation.
“Congratulations, Alex! Once again, you have made your kababayan proud. Sa bawat panalo mo, ipinapakita mo sa buong mundo ang husay, tapang, at determinasyon ng Pilipino,” the House chief said at the time.
(With every victory, you show the whole world the skill, courage, and determination of the Filipino.)
“You are not only winning matches—you are winning hearts around the world and inspiring countless young Filipinos to dream big and believe in what they can achieve,” he added.
The Speaker from Isabela also assured Eala of the nation’s unwavering support as she continued her historic campaign.
Under the resolution, a copy will be transmitted to Eala in recognition of her historic achievements and continuing contribution to Philippine sports.
