Charli XCX, the British artist drops a new one. A titillating new album that reframes her. Whereas it’s been club flavored dance tunes and self-seeking numbers in the past few outings for the singer, the new album signals a change. Gone are the heavy beats of “BRAT” and the introspective tunes of “Wuthering Heights.” She replaces those with euro pop choruses flavored with guitar distortion that lead into sing-song-y breaks. Which is good for Charli XCX.

“Music, Fashion, Film,” the latest album from the “BRAT” singer, starts with “Rock Music” which kicks-off with a welcome “Me and my friends!” that comes heavily doused with rock guitar rhythms.

Following suit is the simplistic “SS26” with its guitar effected melee where we see Charli aching a melody about “spring summer 26!”

The same guitar can be heard on the rock bonanza titled “Card Declined” where Charli XCX imagines herself shopping for “a whole backstory” and “personality” but gets her, you guessed it, card declined.

As the synth intro that carries “Camera” carries almost all over the song making for a good hook. The singer rasps in mock tone and in thick Brit-accent before singing: “and it makes me feel / how it makes me feel / yeah it makes me feel / when the camera is on,” repeatedly in delightful melodies.

From writing hits to pioneering the futuristic sounds of hyperpop, Charli XCX has consistently shaped the sounds of modern music. And with the genre-defining explosiveness of “BRAT,” she proved her status as a dominant force in pop culture. On “Music, Fashion, Film” she continues on that premise. This time armed with a raucous guitar.

In “2007” she turns on a hypnotic line: “I can take you to heaven like it’s 2007.” On “Yeah” and “Wink Wink,” Charli mixes genres like it's going out of business. It’s a little bit of garage punk mixed with industrial grade sounds of techno and hyperpop on “Persona.”

On “Magic Metal Montana” Charli XCX imagines her songwriting partner-producer as her ultimate crush where she sings: “We make music, we talk that way / drink some whiskey, but not really / you don’t drink, so I’ll drink for two / love your haircut, love your dance moves,” before saying: “love your girlfriend, I’d cry if you died.”

Finally, she throws it down in “No One Lasts Forever” (featuring David Cronenberg) in wonderful, choppy and bubbling fashion. Musing, “so now I’m sitting on the floor of a Parisian apartment / with a French girl talking ‘bout reality / she says, ‘no one really knows what the future holds / but we know nothing’s gonna last forever.”

Back in home country, Julie Anne San Jose is on bossa nova bent. At least for his latest single titled “Saglit Lang,” which is a nice turn for the singer. Leaving it on the lite and easy, Julie Anne sings a catchy one with the chorus going “halika rito, sa’king tabi / nais lang maramdaman ang init ng ‘yong mga labi / halika rito, wag kang bibitaw / kahit saglit lang.” Other parts are as fetching, but the chorus says it all in this mid-tempo number.

Lastly, “Puso” by Janine Teñoso.

Janine has grown into this singer that can really get down to it. And she samples it anew on “Puso,” where she sings in this high-falsetto that goes in a sing-song-y way.

She sings “Hindi papatulan / ang mga sigaw ng damdamin / kahit na ‘di mapasakin / ang tanging may hawak ng puso ko,” in this yearning but likeable way. Which has always been the way Janine sings effectively, when she has her heart rendered into two, but that’s how we like it.
