Conveyed and understood.
Malacañang disclosed that the Philippines was able to convey to the United States that the issue concerning the International Criminal Court (ICC) is "sensitive" for the country and that the US understood it.
Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel "Babe" Romualdez said he had spoken with the US State Department regarding the ICC issue, according to Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro.
"May binanggit po sa atin mismo si Ambassador Babe  Romualdez. Gusto po niyang ipaalam sa lahat na siya po ay nakipag-usap sa US State Department patungkol po sa isyu ng ICC (Ambassador Babe Romualdez mentioned to us that he wanted to inform everyone that he had spoken with the US State Department regarding the ICC issue)," Castro said in a Palace briefing on Thursday, July 23.
"Binanggit po niya na ang isyu patungkol sa ICC at ng Pilipinas ay isang sensitibong bagay. At binanggit din po niya ang residual obligation ng Pilipinas, pati po ang pakikipag-cooperate sa Interpol (He said that the issue involving the ICC and the Philippines is a sensitive matter. He also mentioned the Philippines’ residual obligations, as well as its cooperation with Interpol)," Castro added.
"At noong tinanong po natin, yung kay Ambassador kung ano po ang naging reaksyon ng representative ng State Department, ang sabi po ay nauunawaan ang sensitibong bagay na ito sa ating bansa (When we asked the Ambassador about the reaction of the State Department representative, he said that the representative understood that this is a sensitive issue in our country)," Castro further bared.
When asked about the sensitive issues the Philippines have over the US campaign, Castro said it includes the pending cases of some Filipino officials before the ICC,
"Alam naman natin kung ano ngayon ang  isyu ng Pilipinas at ng ICC.  May mga kaso na nakapending  sa ICC na ang mga akusado o respondents dito ay mga Pilipino, mga dating opisyal or rather,  mayroon pa palang incumbent.  Mga dating Pangulo, si Senator Bato at mga iba pang co-perpetrators (We all know what the current issue is between the Philippines and the ICC. There are pending cases before the ICC involving Filipino accused persons or respondents, including former officials—or rather, there is also an incumbent official involved. These include former presidents, Senator Bato, and other alleged co-perpetrators)," Castro said.
In a recent statement, the Philippines is staying out of the recent pronouncement by the United States calling for the dismantling of the "International Criminal Court's threat" to its sovereignty, as it is beyond the government's control.
The US has earlier announced a "sweeping campaign to dismantle the threat posed by the International Criminal Court to U.S. sovereignty."
According to Rubio, the campaign will feature "a whole-of-government response to systematically disable the ICC’s ability to operate, target American servicemen or officials, or otherwise threaten American sovereignty."
He added that the ICC "poses an intolerable threat to U.S. sovereignty – it claims the authority to prosecute and even imprison American servicemen and officials operating on behalf of America’s national interest."
The Philippines is no longer a member of the Rome Statute, having officially withdrawn in March 2019.
As of February this year, the Marcos administration maintains its position over rejoining the ICC. Malacañang then said there is no discussion about the country's return to the ICC.
