Senator Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday, July 16 challenged the Marcos administration saying the Senate Minority bloc will resume its investigation into the anomalous flood control projects as the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) continues its investigation into the alleged anomalies in the bidding and funding of the projects for the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
“Ito ang proposal natin sa NBI, sa Malacañang, at saka sa DOJ (Department of Justice)—imbestigahan niyo yung Southeast Asian Games of 2019, kung saan tayo nag-overall champion at tiningala ng buong Southeast Asia. Imbestigahan niyo ng husto, bigay niyo lahat (This is our proposal to the NBI, Malacañang, and the DOJ (Department of Justice): investigate the 2019 Southeast Asian Games—where we emerged as overall champions and were admired by the entire Southeast Asia. Investigate it thoroughly; give it your all),” Cayetano said on Facebook Live.
“We will support totally…tapos, ako naman, sampo ng aming mga kasama na ngayon ay nasa minority, imbestigahan naman namin ang flood control. Ano? Deal? (And then, my colleagues and I—who are currently in the minority—will investigate the flood control projects. How about it? Is it a deal)?” he said.
Earlier, NBI Director Melvin Matibag said he would create a task force to investigate the alleged anomalies in the 2019 SEA Games, saying there is “new information and documents” that the agency received involving the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC).
In 2019, Cayetano was the chairperson of the PHISGOC.
During the sixth day of the impeachment trial, Cayetano, fellow senator-judges Robinhood Padilla and Pia Cayetano, questioned Matibag’s remarks saying it was clearly meant to intimidate.
Matibag is set to testify next week on the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. The NBI chief is a witness for the House prosecution panel.
