Why walking is the best way to rediscover Manila

Birkenstock, the Tourism Promotions Board and the Department of Tourism invite Filipinos to rediscover the country one step at a time

Lifestyle journalism has its perks.
For many Filipinos, their first real travel experience is boarding a plane bound for another country. Mine happened differently. Because of work, I've been fortunate enough to travel across the Philippines—from the centuries-old churches of Ilocos and the vast landscapes of Isabela to the rolling hills of South Cotabato and the bustling streets of General Santos City, with countless destinations in between.
Yet despite having seen much of the country, this recent experience reminded me that traveling and simply walking through a place are two entirely different things.
You notice details that would otherwise pass unnoticed from behind a car window. A weathered façade. A mysterious courtyard. The texture of old cobblestones beneath your feet. Even the pace changes. Walking asks you to slow down, and in doing so, allows a city to tell its own story.
Ironically, that rediscovery began not hundreds of kilometers away, but right here in Manila.
It took a pair of Birkenstocks to remind me just how much culture surrounds us every day.

As part of its newly launched The Philippines by Foot campaign, Birkenstock Philippines partnered with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) to encourage Filipinos to experience the country through walking—not simply as exercise, but as a way of connecting with local history, heritage and communities.
The campaign began appropriately enough at Kilometer Zero inside Rizal Park, the geographical point from which distances across the Philippine archipelago are measured. Joined by members of the Birkenstock community, tourism officials, media and invited guests, we walked through Luneta's historic grounds, stopping at landmarks including the Rizal Monument, the site of Dr. Jose Rizal's martyrdom, the Gomburza Marker, the Chinese Garden, the Japanese Garden and the National Museum complex.
It wasn't a race.
It wasn't a fitness challenge.
It was simply an invitation to observe.

The following morning continued that same philosophy inside Intramuros, where the campaign partnered with the Just Walk PH community for another leisurely walk through the Walled City. Passing the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, Plaza de Roma, Villa Immaculada Park, Silahis Art and Artifacts, and the centuries-old bastions that once protected Old Manila, I found myself appreciating something I've probably overlooked too often—that history is best experienced at walking pace.
For someone who has spent years covering food, travel and culture, that realization felt strangely refreshing.
I've flown across the country chasing stories. I've covered festivals in Mindanao, dined with chefs in Cebu, explored heritage towns in Northern Luzon and written about destinations many Filipinos hope to visit one day. Yet there was something equally rewarding about rediscovering Manila, one careful step at a time.
The campaign's headquarters for the weekend reflected that same appreciation for heritage.
Our home for the experience was The Henry Hotel Manila, a restored collection of pre-war homes that feels like a conventional hotel but built in a beloved ancestral house. Walking through its wooden floors, Machuca tiles, vintage furniture and leafy courtyards immediately reminded me of my late mother's old home in Santa Rosa, Laguna. It carried the warmth that only old Filipino houses seem capable of preserving.

As evening fell, the hotel became the venue for Birkenstock Museo, an exhibition that moved away from polished advertising in favor of real stories. Nearly 50 longtime Birkenstock wearers shared photographs of their well-loved pairs alongside the journeys they had taken in them. Among those featured were National Living Treasure Apo Whang-Od, whose sandals have traversed the mountain paths of Buscalan, Toyo Eatery chef Jordy Navarra, whose footbeds bear the marks of countless hours inside a Michelin-recognized kitchen, and furniture maker Edward Sibunga of e/lou, whose work is rooted in craftsmanship. Together with everyday Filipinos, they illustrated how one pair of sandals can quietly accompany lives lived in remarkably different ways.
It was also at The Henry Hotel where Tourism Promotions Board Chief Operating Officer Maria Margarita Nograles joined Birkenstock Southeast Asia Managing Director Evelyn Chua and Primer Group CEO Jimmy Thai in outlining the broader vision for The Philippines by Foot. Rather than limiting the campaign to Manila, they spoke of identifying walkable destinations across the country, encouraging travelers to experience local culture, heritage and communities at a slower pace.

It's an idea that feels increasingly relevant.
Travel today often revolves around checklists—how many attractions can be squeezed into a day, how many photos can be uploaded before heading to the next stop. Walking quietly challenges that mindset. It invites people to linger, notice details, strike up conversations, duck into neighborhood cafés and discover places that rarely appear in guidebooks.
After years of traveling from one end of the Philippines to the other, I was reminded that meaningful travel isn't always measured by distance. Sometimes it's measured by how slowly you're willing to move.
The Philippines has never lacked beautiful places. Sometimes, all it asks of us is to slow down long enough to truly see them.
