CEBU CITY – A traffic enforcer was injured after he was hit by a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) while manning traffic in Barangay Capitol Site here on Wednesday morning, July 1.
The incident, which was captured by a security camera, happened on the junction box at the intersection of Escario St. and Osmeña Boulevard in front of the Cebu Provincial Capitol.
The victim from the Cebu City Transportation Office was identified as Jovanie Verano, who sustained minor injuries.
Video showed that Verano stopped vehicles from crossing the junction box as traffic started to build up on the opposite end.
Verano stood in front of a white Isuzu MUX which stopped for traffic.
He said he stopped vehicles from crossing the junction box to prevent them from blocking cars coming from Osmeña Boulevard.
Verano was seen standing and facing against the SUV which suddenly moved forward and hit the traffic enforcer. The impact threw the Verano to the ground.
He rolled over to his side and escaped being ran over as the SUV continued moving forward. The SUV did not stop but was chased by a parking attendant who saw the incident.
The SUV was later cornered when its path was blocked by the chasing parking attendant. The driver was identified as Bartolome Piol, a 62-year-old resident of Toledo City.
Piol said that he did not see the traffic enforcer when he drove forward. He promised to help shoulder Verona’s hospital bills.
