CEBU CITY – Timely cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can save lives.
With this in mind, the Philippine Heart Association (PHA)-Cebu chapter is ramping up its “CPR-Ready Cebu” campaign as one of the organization’s flagship programs.
Headed by its newly installed president Dr. Christine Anne Inso, PHA-Cebu is looking to conduct CPR training in all 80 barangays in Cebu City.
“We started to collaborate with the Cebu City and Cebu provincial governments two years ago,” said Inso.
Inso succeeded Dr. Jennifer Castillo during the recent induction of PHA-Cebu 2026-2027 officials. PHA national president Dr. Aurora Muriel Gamponia led the ceremony.
“We will continue and strengthen our partnership with the Cebu City government as well as the Cebu province, through our CPR program, advancing our vision of a CPR-Ready Cebu,” said Inso.
Inso added that PHA-Cebu will also ramp up its cardiovascular health awareness among the youth.
“Prevention begins early,” she said.
Inso emphasized that preventive cardiology strategy will need the cooperation of the community.
“Through schools, communities, sports programs, and social media platforms, we will advocate for healthier lifestyles that can prevent development of cardiovascular diseases long before they begin,” said Inso.
To amplify its campaign, Inso disclosed that PHA-Cebu launched its website last February that reinforced its Facebook page.
Inso said that after a series of meetings with Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival last year, PHA-Cebu has conducted CPR training in two barangays.
According to Inso, the usual deterrent in doing hands-only CPR is the fear of not doing it right or lack of confidence.
“Most of the barangay health workers do not know the proper way of doing CPR. We started in a Cebu City barangay and then in another barangay. So, we are going to continue that with the goal to finish all the 80 barangays. Our target is to do five to 10 barangays every month,” Inso added.
“Hands-only CPR should be taught to children as young as 10 to 12 years,” she stressed.
PHA-Cebu is gearing up for the nationwide celebration of National CPR Day on July 17 possibly at the Cebu Coliseum.
