CEBU CITY – Security in schools here has been tightened in the aftermath of the deadly shooting inside a school in Tacloban City on Monday, June 22.
Police Col. Franco Rudolf Oriol, deputy city director for administration of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said a measure called “school hardening” has been taken to ensure safety in campuses.
Oriol said the measure includes deployments, security assessments, stricter access controls, and closer coordination with students, parents, and school officials.
“Part of the CCPO’s response is to intensify our school hardening measures and security protocols in different schools,” Oriol said in a press conference.
Oriol said the CCPO has increased police deployment following the attack at the San Jose National High School.
“Aside from security personnel, we are also increasing mobile and motorcycle patrols,” Oriol said.
Aside from conducting a comprehensive review of school vulnerabilities, intelligence personnel have also been directed to assess security conditions in schools.
How to prevent weapons from being brought in campuses is also being assessed.
“We have tasked our intelligence personnel to conduct and review security assessments in all schools, including access control measures, to prevent the entry of bladed weapons and firearms and avoid a similar incident to what happened in Tacloban,” Oriol said.
The CCPO is also strengthening communication and engagement within school communities.
Station commanders will be tasked to hold dialogues with students, parents, and school administrators.
Through constant communication, concerns will be identified that would help prevent untoward incidents from happening, Oriol said.
