Retired Army major general Jovito Palparan remains imprisoned at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) assured on Monday, June 15.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. made the assurance himself in response to claims that Palparan is no longer in Bilibid.
“Catapang categorically denied these claims, affirming that Palparan continues to serve his sentence within the premises of the New Bilibid Prison,” said the bureau.
“He emphasized that any transfer of inmates, especially high-profile individuals like Palparan, follows strict protocols and involves proper documentation, none of which has been recorded for the retired general,” it added.
The bureau assured that it remains committed to lawful procedures.
“Any future developments or changes in his detention status will be communicated through official channels to maintain clarity and public trust,” it said.
Palparan was convicted in September 2018 by the Malolos City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 15 for kidnapping and serious illegal detention over the 2006 disappearance of University of the Philippines (UP) students Karen Empeno and Sherlyn Cadapan.
On Monday, the families of the missing students filed before the Supreme Court (SC) a manifestation and motion that requested the high court to direct the BuCor to declare the present whereabouts of Palpalan.
