It's now the rainy season, and perhaps it's true what they say: you only realize what is gone when you start to miss it.
As I write this story, a heavy downpour pounds the night outside. Yet in my mind, I find myself transported back to Siargao, where sunlight, sea breeze, and salt air seem like memories from another season altogether.

Last month, Manila Bulletin Lifestyle joined the ZYN, a smoke-free nicotine pouch brand, for the final stop of its "Summer Uninterrupted" island series, a three-day gathering that brought guests to Siargao, arguably the country's most sought-after beach destination today, much to the chagrin of die-hard Boracay loyalists. The trip coincided with the tail end of summer, when travelers flocked to the island not only for surfing, but also for its increasingly sophisticated dining scene and nightlife.

It was my third visit to Siargao, and as I have written before, there is something about the island that is difficult to explain. A certain je ne sais quoi, perhaps.
Maybe it is the weather, forever changing. One moment, the sun shines brightly, and the next, a cool drizzle rolls in, bringing relief from the tropical heat. The island feels alive, never static.
Perhaps it is the sunsets. Watching the sky turn shades of orange and violet from General Luna remains one of my favorite experiences in the country. In my opinion, even the famed sunsets of La Union have met their match here.

Behind the island series is ZYN, a smoke-free nicotine pouch brand and part of Philip Morris International's broader smoke-free vision. According to Anton Rodriguez, brand manager of ZYN Philippines, who was with us during the festivities, the company aims to provide adult nicotine users with alternatives to cigarettes that fit seamlessly into everyday life. Since launching in the Philippines in late 2023, ZYN has seen accelerated growth, reflecting what Anton described as a growing demand for convenient smoke-free options. "Globally, ZYN is the number one nicotine pouch brand," he said. "We see there's growing demand, not just for convenient smoke-free options, but for alternatives that still fit seamlessly into everyday life. And that is exactly what ZYN is designed to do, so they can stay in the moment whether they are working, travelling, or enjoying summer experiences, like what we are doing here now in Siargao."

A beach destination that eats well
Once known mainly as a surfer's paradise, Siargao has developed into one of the country's most exciting culinary destinations.
The island now boasts everything from specialty coffee shops and bakeries to elevated restaurants and beach clubs that would not feel out of place in Metro Manila.
Our stay at Siargao Island Villas immediately reminded me why I keep returning. Mornings began slowly, with breakfast by the beach and nowhere in particular to rush to.
Lunch on the first day was held at Roots, one of General Luna's popular dining spots. The afternoon was intentionally left open, allowing guests to experience Cloud 9, where surfers chased waves while others simply watched from the boardwalk.

Unlike itineraries that attempt to fill every hour, Siargao rewards those who slow down. The island's appeal lies not only in what you do, but also in the moments in between.
The following day brought more free time, this time at Kanaloa Beach Club, before heading to Corregidor Island for an afternoon gathering surrounded by turquoise waters and rolling hills. The beauty of the island remains remarkably untouched. Even with tourism's growth, one can still sense the raw, almost virginal character of the Philippine landscape.
Where the night comes alive

When the sun sets, Siargao shifts gears.
Evenings during the trip revolved around the island's lively dining and nightlife scene. Dinner at Barbosa gave way to cocktails and music, while another night took us to Mr. Turtle before ending at Siargao Beach Club.
Throughout the trip, ZYN subtly transformed the spaces we visited, from the hotel to various restaurants, creating themed experiences that complemented the island atmosphere without overwhelming it.

The finale came on the last evening: an island party powered by DJs and fueled by the easygoing energy that Siargao seems to possess in abundance. Having covered lifestyle and travel for years and experienced my fair share of beach gatherings, I can say that the celebration rivaled some of the most memorable "tugs-tugan" nights I have encountered.

But what struck me most was not the music or the festivities.
It was the crowd.

Surfers, entrepreneurs, tourists, content creators, and locals mingled effortlessly. No one seemed in a hurry. There was no pressure to do anything beyond enjoying the moment.
That, perhaps, is Siargao's greatest magic.
The island has evolved far beyond its surfing roots. Today, it is a destination where food lovers, beachgoers, and night owls coexist. It offers a lifestyle that feels increasingly rare in a world obsessed with schedules and notifications.
And now that the rainy season has arrived, with memories of blue skies replaced by gray clouds outside my window, I find myself thinking about Siargao once again.
Not because I miss the parties or the beaches.
But because, somehow, the island has a way of making you feel that life can slow down, if only for a few days.
And once you've experienced that, it is difficult not to long for it again. After three visits, I know one thing for certain: I will be back for a fourth.
