CANDON CITY – For every setback comes the lesson it brings. Alas Pilipinas knew this very well.
The Filipina hitters fell short of advancing to the medal rounds after suffering a 16-25, 14-25, 10-25 loss to Chinese Taipei in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup showdown here at the Candon City Arena Thursday, June 11.
Veteran spiker Alyssa Valdez remained optimistic despite the outcome, noting it was a good exposure for the squad especially for the youngsters.
“We really need preparation, and most especially, medyo veteran na rin ‘yong mga nakakalaban naman dito, and kami as veteran din, kailangan din ng quality time together as a team,” said Valdez, who was limited to two points against the Taiwanese.
“So, maramig pang maabot ‘yong mga bata rito [sa Alas], so hopefully, maganda experience ‘to para sa kanila,” said the national returnee, who spearheaded Alas vets alongside Jovelyn Gonzaga and Ces Molina.
Valdez also stressed that the up-and-coming hitters should continue serving the country by proudly representing the national team on the international stage.
Interim coach Shaq Delos Santos also emphasized the importance of readiness as they were relegated to the classification round in the tournament presented by the Philippine Sports Commission and the City of Candon headed by Mayor Eric D. Singson.
“Talagang malaking factor dito is ‘yong preparation namin, and then siguro kailangan pa ng more time para rito. We need to accept na ganito talaga ‘yong pwedeng mangyari,” said Delos Santos.
“But, hindi kami mawawalan ng hope kasi mas gusto naming maging mas better pa ‘yong volleyball [play] namin,” he added.
With the Yi-Jen Liao-led squad displaying masterclass on both ends to lead them back to the semifinal, the Philippines, on the other hand, failed to repeat their success last year.
Then bannered by Angel Canino and Jia de Guzman, the Filipinas took silver and finished behind host Vietnam.
They now await their opponent in the said stage on Saturday, June 13, while the semis cast is already completed with Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Kazakhstan and reigning champion Vietnam duking it out for a title shot.
