CANDON CITY – Alas Pilipinas put up a gallant stand but eventually bowed to Chinese Taipei, 25-16, 25-14, 25-10, to end its bid for a medal finish in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup here at the Candon City Arena Thursday, June 11.
A one-day break was not enough for the Nationals to prepare for the strong Taiwanese squad which simply had too much firepower to demolish the hometown bets and secure a semifinal berth.
The Philippines, sporting a 2-3 card, was relegated to the classification round where it hopes to perform better and earn valuable points for rankings.
Alas previously won silver after it yielded to three-time champion and host Vietnam.
Taipei, on the other hand, grabbed the top spot in Group A with a 4-0 card, enough to seal its semis spot and also a chance to better its bronze-medal finish last year.
Wan-Yun Hsu steered the Taiwanese with 14 points, while Yi-Chi Chang scored. Ciao-En Chen and Yu-Chun Tsai conspired for 21 points.
They go for a group sweep as they take on fellow unbeaten South Korea on Friday, June 12, at the same venue of the competition presented by the Philippine Sports Commission and the City of Candon headed by Mayor Eric D. Singson.
A win for the Koreans over Australia will earn them a semis slot alongside the Taiwanese. Reigning champion Vietnam and Kazakhstan are also assured of advancing to the semis after topping Pool B.
Alas Pilipinas had a hard time offensively as top scorer Alyssa Solomon only logged six points. Ces Molina and Nina Ytang chipped in 3 points each.
