After thousands of dedicated fans worldwide clamored for a theatrical screening, “The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act” finally hit the big screen over the weekend. It marks the third win for indie productions, after “Backrooms” and “Obsession,” both made by fellow YouTubers, which also made big numbers with their theatrical debut.
For those not in the know, “The Amazing Digital Circus (TADC)” is an animated series by Gooseworx uploaded on the Glitch YouTube channel. To date, the entire series has amassed well over 1.3 billion views. It has a steady local following as well, with Filipino fans flocking to the opening night premiere across several local cinemas, thanks to Encore Philippines. It's a similar clamor we previously felt with the theatrical release of Markiplier's “Iron Lung.” TADC centers around an oddball group of sorts stuck within a digital world run by the chaotic AI ringmaster Caine. Throughout the series, Pomni and her newfound friends try their best to understand the virtual world they're trapped in and attempt to find a way out. Think of it as a world similar to “Severance,” but with a touch more whimsy.
AI OVERLORD Ringmaster Caine is an AI who controls the virtual world Pomni and friends reside in
In “TADC: The Last Act,” we are given the theatrical treatment of the final two episodes of the series. Gooseworx has clearly put herself into making sure fans of the show are given a proper send-off, even with all the harassment and turmoil she had to endure from overly enthusiastic followers throughout the series’ run. Without revealing too much, we are given a closer look at the personal relationships some of the beloved characters have gone through.
IT'S COMPLICATED Much of the film centers around Jax and his relationship with the rest of the TADC crew
Front and center in the finale’s spotlight is Jax, the sarcastic, purple bunny without a care in the world. Throughout the series, he is known for his testy relationship with the rest of the gang. Their friendship is put to the ultimate test after Jax's recent actions from a previous adventure potentially kept them trapped in the digital world. Despite this, Pomni remains adamant in keeping the gang tight-knit and powering through every trial thrown their way. Gooseworx doesn't hold back in giving the audience emotional gut punches as we see more of the gang's dynamic unravel in the seemingly hopeless cause. Audible reactions from the audience could be heard throughout major scenes in the film. Through it all, we felt awe, despair, shock, and excitement.
Perhaps the only gripe we have with the finale is the desire to have more. Inclusion of the eighth episode as part of the theatrical release felt unnecessary, especially with it already having been available online. It might have done well to start with the quick recap, then drop us right into the final episode. Admittedly, however, it was an absolute treat to witness Caine's performance of “The One Who's Running the Show” on the big screen. Hardcore fans might also leave the theater with more questions rather than answers about the digital world they reside in.
“The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act” is currently in theaters and will be released for free on YouTube on Friday, June 19.
