A total of 100 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City have been transferred to the Leyte Regional Prison (LRP).
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said the arrival of new detainees brought to 15,730 the total number of PDLs who have been transferred from Bilibid to various detention facilities since the start of the term of President Marcos.
“This strategic move not only paves the way for redevelopment but also represents a forward-looking approach to asset management for sustainable institutional growth,” Catapang stated.
He explained the transfer is part of efforts to decongest BuCor prisons and convert the NBP reservation in Muntinlupa City into a business district.
Catapang pointed out that the NBP reserve has a total of 375.61 hectares including 160 hectares set aside for commercial leasing arrangements and 106 hectares allotted for public-private partnerships (PPP) or for joint venture (JV) agreements.
The director general said the conversion of the Bilibid property is aimed at generating income for the BuCor.
He projected that the 160-hectare property could generate approximately P1.25 billion to P1.92 billion.
With this, the BuCor chief assured that none of the properties will be sold and all assets will remain firmly with the government.
