Philippines weaponizes GenAI to snatch market share from India's BPOs

The local contact center and business process management (CC-BPM) sector is aggressively integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to shield margins and accelerate revenue growth, betting that automation will counteract escalating geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds.
According to data released by the Customer Xperience Association of the Philippines (CXAP) during a press conference on Monday, June 8, the industry is projected to expand by more than five percnet this year, with total revenues climbing to ₱2.20 trillion from ₱2.09 trillion recorded in 2025.
This expansion is happening alongside a steady workforce increase, with full-time headcount tracking toward 1.73 million employees, up nearly three percent from 1.68 million a year ago.
Rather than cannibalizing the sector, generative AI is acting as a premium pricing mechanism. CXAP President Haidee Enriquez noted that average revenue per full-time employee is forecasted to rise to between ₱1.3 million and ₱1.36 million this year, a sharp increase from last year’s average of ₱1.23 million. The productivity gains from AI are allowing firms to command higher contractual fees from enterprise clients by demonstrating superior, faster returns on investment.
“When you have a human at the center aided by AI, that human is able to service and resolve customers' concerns faster,” Enriquez said.
She emphasized that the integration is shifting the sector up the value chain, enabling local outsourcing providers to pitch advanced, AI-augmented services such as data-driven marketing, strategic procurement, and customer experience consulting.
While the automation wave has displaced some entry-level transaction roles, it is simultaneously restructuring the local labor economy. The industry is seeing a hiring pivot toward specialized positions including prompt engineers, AI model trainers, and ethical compliance specialists. However, the benefits to workers face near-term constraints.
While full-time employee salaries rose by three percent to five percent last year, operators are flashing signs of caution for the remainder of 2026. Wage increases are increasingly uncertain as corporate margins stretch thin under rising fuel and operating costs tied to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Longer term, local industry leaders view AI as an architectural bridge to global market leadership. The Philippines currently ranks as the world’s second-largest customer experience provider behind India, where automated efficiencies yield a significantly higher average revenue per employee of roughly ₱1.85 million. By closing this efficiency gap via automation, local firms aim to aggressively siphon market share away from their South Asian rival.
“We want to be the world's global CX partner,” said Julian Valenzuela, a CXAP board director. “That’s something that I believe our members are capable of doing as long as they can deliver AI-enabled, multi-channel, human-centered customer experience solutions.”
Growth this year is anticipated to be buoyed by a fresh influx of client acquisitions across the healthcare sector and enterprise global capability centers. Demand from small and medium-sized enterprises is also strengthening as smaller overseas firms look to leverage outsourced AI tools to match the scale of larger competitors.
The contact center segment remains the dominant engine of the country’s broader digital export economy. Based on CXAP data, contact centers will capture 85 percent of total revenues and command 87 percent of the aggregate workforce within the wider information technology and business process management framework this year.
Looking forward into 2026, the comprehensive IT-BPM sector is on track to hit an annual revenue run rate of ₱2.59 trillion, supporting a domestic labor force of 1.97 million workers.
